But even now that her secret is out, Elsie must be careful how she uses the new abilities she’s discovering, or she may play right into the criminal’s hands.Book Spellmaker (Spellbreaker Book 2) Review :
Holmberg completes the Spellbreaker duology in this book which takes us full circle in the mystery of dead spellmakers and stolen opuses. Elsie and Bacchus team up (in more ways than one) to bring down the culprit. Elsie also has many of the questions about her past answered so that she can move on with her life.I enjoyed the ending of this story, but felt it was rather rushed. The climax and resolution both seemed flat and stilted, although it’s possible if this has been a stand-alone novel with both parts included, I would not have found anything lacking. It was nice to see Ogden’s character fleshed out as he is freed of his magical compulsion, and we meet some other great characters in this installment. But again, their presence is hemmed in by the constraints on the plot development. The first novel was a real treat, but I definitely feel this series would have benefited from either having the two parts merged, or by extending it to a third book.Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the copy of this ebook. These are my free and honest opinions. I very much enjoyed the first book in this series, which is a not-too-serious journey with likeable characters. This second book picks up where the first left off and ties off the loose ends. In that sense, it is a successful end to the series. But both plot and character development suffer in this book, when we have several very convenient devices and characters introduced to the team too easily. The book also resolves the larger mystery from the first (why all of the various murders and thefts had occurred) but does so in a manner that is too simple, easy, and therefore disappointing. This book feels like the author had a checklist of ends to tie off and approached the writing from that checklist standpoint, rather than how to construct a story that resolved the questions satisfyingly along the way. Ultimately, it's worth a read but doesn't hold up to the fun of the first.
